Images of the Ocean House
Music at the Ocean House
This is a picture of my father-in-law in front of the Ocean House,
ready for the beach. This would be about 1957. Typically, musicians
were booked for summer months through agents Ralph Stewart or Perry
Rubin, then would be given a room to stay. James would come home
to Providence on Sundays and return on Mondays. Sometimes his wife
and daughter (my wife) would accompany him for a couple days at
a
time.
For the hotel, his trio used to play light classical music and
show tunes in the lounge from 3 - 5 (cocktail hours), then from
6 - 9 in the dining
room. This went on for several summers in the late 50's and early
60's.
My wife remembers one beautiful dinner of lambchops, and how happy
they all were together on these mini-vacations. She never wanted
to leave, and always put on a fuss. Being in a lovely place by the
shore, why would she?
